In short: In combat sports, the definition of a flyweight is far from universal. While boxing fans recognize a specific limit, mixed martial arts and kickboxing promotions use vastly different weight ceilings, creating a complex landscape of competing standards across the globe.

The flyweight division is a specific weight class used in various combat disciplines, including boxing, kickboxing, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts. For championship bouts in professional boxing, the category comprises athletes whose weight does not exceed 51 kg (112 lb). Historically, this was the final of the eight traditional boxing weight classes to be established. Before 1909, any boxer weighing less than a featherweight was categorized as a bantamweight, regardless of their actual size.

The division's origins feature trailblazers such as Sid Smith, who secured the inaugural flyweight world title in 1911 via the body that later formed the British Boxing Board of Control. Another significant figure, Jimmy Wilde, reigned from 1916 to 1923 and was the first fighter to be recognized as a flyweight champion in both the United Kingdom and the United States.

Modern combat sports, however, lack a single unified standard. In mixed martial arts (MMA), the Nevada State Athletic Commission and the Association of Boxing Commissions define flyweight as competitors weighing 125 lb (57 kg) or below, positioned between strawweight and bantamweight. The UFC uses a slightly different range of 116 to 125 lb (53 to 57 kg). Other promotions vary even more widely: ONE Championship sets the limit at 61.2 kg (135 lb), while the BKB™ division allows up to 70 kg (154 lb). Even within kickboxing, the International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) uses a range of approximately 50.95 kg to 53.18 kg.
