How a math rock background and cow bones shaped a British rock sound
In short: Before topping the UK charts, Foals were defined by rigid musical rules and unconventional percussion. From their origins in the Oxford music scene to recording in New York, the band's journey involves unexpected collaborations and a sonic evolution from minimalist techno-blends to expansive, award-winning rock.
Formed in Oxford in 2005, Foals began with a distinct, disciplined approach to songwriting. Early on, lead singer Yannis Philippakis described their sound as a calculated fusion of minimalism and techno, governed by strict constraints such as using only staccato rhythms and high-pitched guitar parts. This era was marked by the band's formation from members of the math rock group Edmund Fitzgerald and the Oxford-based band Face Meets Grill.
The band's production history is equally unconventional. While recording their debut, Antidotes, in New York, they rejected a mix by Davek Sitek that they felt sounded like it was recorded in the Grand Canyon. Later, during the sessions for Holy Fire, the band sought a 'primitive' sound by having interns collect animal bones—specifically cow and sheep shoulder blades—from butchers in Willesden High Road to use as percussion instruments. During this era, they collaborated with famous producers Alan Moulder and Flood, both of whom earned UK Producer of the Year for that record.
Foals' commercial peak arrived with their sixth studio album, Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 2, released in October 2019, which became their first to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart. Their career has been marked by significant shifts, including the 2018 departure of bassist Walter Gervers and the band's forced hiatus from touring in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, they have maintained a strong international presence, performing at major festivals like Glastonbury, Coachella, and Roskilde.
