How a declining minor party achieved a record-breaking parliamentary victory
In short: In early 2022, the Green Actions Party was struggling with low polling and a leadership retreat. Yet, through a rapid rebranding and a strategic takeover, it transformed into the Freedom Movement, securing a historic mandate to lead Slovenia.
The transition began in January 2022 when Robert Golob, then Chairman of the board at GEN-I, proposed transforming the struggling Green Actions Party into the Freedom Movement. The official rebranding occurred on 26 January 2022, with Golob elected as president. To safeguard the new organization against hostile takeovers or internal disruption, the party implemented a rigorous vetting process, requiring every parliamentary candidate to undergo an interview with Golob himself.
The party's rise was cemented during the 2022 parliamentary elections, where it achieved a historic feat by winning 41 of the 90 seats in the National Assembly. With 34.5% of the vote, this display established a new high for any individual party since Slovenia's independence. This victory effectively unseated the Slovenian Democratic Party and its three-term leader, Janez Janša. Following the election, Golob formed a governing coalition with the Social Democrats and The Left, officially assuming the office of Prime Minister on 25 May 2022.
The movement's strength was further bolstered by strategic mergers and diverse recruitment. In June 2022, the party approved the merger of the List of Marjan Šarec and the Party of Alenka Bratušek. The party's electoral list featured a notable array of professionals, including former boxer Dejan Zavec, journalist Mojca Šetinc Pašek, and former University of Ljubljana rector Igor Papič. As a social-liberal, pro-European party, the Freedom Movement focuses on digitalising schools, reforming education, and enhancing healthcare, with an ambition to see Slovenia rank among the 20 most competitive nations globally.
