How a fictional sea breeze helped name an Australian football club
In short: The Fremantle Football Club, known as the Dockers, almost missed out on its iconic name due to legal disputes and internal fears. To secure approval, executives invented a myth about a local wind, turning a white lie into a permanent piece of the club's folklore and identity.
Founded in 1994, the Fremantle Football Club represents a historic stronghold of Australian rules football in Western Australia. When the club was launched, its board members were concerned about the name 'Dockers' due to potential associations with the controversial Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union. To bypass this, inaugural chairman Ross Kelly and CEO David Hatt concocted a story claiming the name derived from the 'Fremantle Doctor,' a local sea breeze allegedly once called the 'Fremantle Docker.' This fabrication successfully reassured the board and allowed the name to proceed.
The path to the name was not entirely smooth. Shortly after the 1994 launch, Levi Strauss & Co., which owned the 'Dockers' clothing brand, challenged the club's right to use the term. Consequently, the club and the AFL suspended official use of the nickname in 1997. It remained popular among fans, appearing in the club song and magazine, until the club finally secured the rights from Levi Strauss & Co. in 2010. This allowed for a full rebranding, including updated logos and playing strips that moved away from the original anchor-based designs.
Despite a rich history in the sport, Fremantle remains one of only three active AFL clubs that has never won a premiership. The club has experienced significant highs and lows, including a maiden Grand Final appearance in 2013 and a second in 2026. Their most successful period occurred between 2013 and 2015, featuring three consecutive top-four finishes. Today, the club continues to balance its maritime heritage with modern aspirations, playing home games at the 60,000-capacity Perth Stadium and maintaining a deep connection to the local Noongar community through initiatives like the Walyalup identity during Indigenous Rounds.
