Can a grassroots movement successfully transition into a formal, national-level political party?
In short: Born from the Don't Let Belgrade Drown association, the Green–Left Front has rapidly evolved from local activism into a recognized parliamentary force. By prioritizing environmental protection, social justice, and progressive urban policies, this Serbian party is testing whether a participatory, grassroots model can survive the complexities of national governance.
The Green–Left Front (ZLF) emerged in July 2023 as the successor to the Don't Let Belgrade Drown association, a group previously focused on local issues in the Serbian capital. The transition, formalized in August 2023, reflected a strategic shift to expand influence beyond Belgrade. Led by co-presidents Radomir Lazović and Biljana Đorđević, the party maintains a structure rooted in participatory democracy, incorporating specialized branches such as the Green Youth of Serbia and the Autonomous Women's Front.
Ideologically, the ZLF is positioned as a progressive, left-wing organization. Political scientist Dušan Spasojević categorizes it alongside movements like Croatia's Možemo as part of a new left that prioritizes post-materialist concerns—such as civil rights and ecology—over traditional labor-focused politics. This focus has drawn criticism from some radical leftists, who argue the party's base remains disconnected from the working class. Despite these critiques, the party has secured a foothold in the National Assembly and became a full member of the European Greens in December 2024.
The party's policy platform is wide-ranging, encompassing opposition to lithium mining, support for LGBTQ rights, and a firm stance against the privatization of public services. On the international stage, the ZLF advocates for Serbia’s integration into the European Union while maintaining an anti-militarist stance, which includes condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza. As it navigates the volatile landscape of Serbian politics, the ZLF continues to balance its activist origins with the demands of formal legislative participation.
