The striker who became Aston Villa's most prolific Premier League scorer for nearly two decades
In short: For 11 consecutive seasons, Gabriel Agbonlahor was the leading Premier League goalscorer for Aston Villa. A product of their academy, the English forward's career was defined by loyalty to his boyhood club, spanning hundreds of appearances and significant milestones in the top flight.
Gabriel Agbonlahor, born on 13 October 1986, spent his entire professional career with Aston Villa. After joining the club's youth ranks in 1994, he signed a two-year professional contract in June 2005. His Premier League debut arrived on 18 March 2006 at age 19, when manager David O'Leary handed him a rare start against Everton due to a shortage of senior strikers.
Agbonlahor was a versatile forward, capable of playing as a striker or on the wing. Across all competitions, he featured 391 times for Aston Villa, with 322 of those coming in the Premier League. His scoring prowess was particularly notable; he recorded 87 goals for the club and held the record as Villa's leading Premier League goalscorer with 74 goals across 11 consecutive seasons. This long-standing record stood until May 2025, when it was broken by Ollie Watkins.
Notable personal feats include netting a 'perfect' hat-trick—using his head, left foot, and right foot—against Manchester City throughout the 2008–09 campaign. This feat was the third-fastest hat-trick in Premier League history, achieved in just seven minutes. Beyond his club success, he earned three senior international caps for England, making his debut in 2008.
Agbonlahor's tenure at Villa Park was marked by both high-scoring periods and tactical shifts. While he was often deployed as a winger under manager Gérard Houllier, he found success as a central striker under managers like Martin O'Neill. His influence was such that he was named team captain following Stiliyan Petrov's leukaemia diagnosis in April 2012.
