From the streets of Jardim Peri to the heights of European football
In short: Born into a single-parent household in São Paulo, Gabriel Jesus rose from playing street football in the favelas to becoming a global icon. His journey through the ranks of Palmeiras and Manchester City reveals a career defined by clinical finishing and immense resilience.
Gabriel Jesus's ascent began in the neighborhood of Jardim Peri, where he grew up in difficult conditions. After honing his skills in street football and amateur clubs like Associação Atlenta Anhanguera, he signed a youth contract with Palmeiras in July 2013. His early professional years were marked by prolific scoring, including a 2014 season where he netted 37 goals in 22 matches for the under-17 state championship.
His transition to the global stage was rapid. Following a breakout period at Palmeiras, where he helped secure a national league title in 2016, he moved to Manchester City in January 2017 for a reported £27 million. In England, he became a vital component of a dominant side, winning four Premier League titles and several domestic cups. His versatility allowed him to operate as a striker, winger, or attacking midfielder, earning high praise from managers like Pep Guardiola.
Despite facing significant setbacks—including a metatarsal fracture in 2017, a knee injury during the 2022 World Cup, and a devastating ACL injury in January 2025—Jesus has consistently returned to the pitch. His career has seen him move to Arsenal in 2022 for £45 million and eventually to Barcelona in September 2026. Beyond the pitch, his identity remains rooted in his faith and origins, often seen in celebrations like his 'Alô mãe' gesture or wearing shirts that reference his religious upbringing.
