In short: Europe is not a simple landmass but a vast, interconnected collection of peninsulas and islands. While often viewed as a distinct continent, its geography is defined by a striking contrast between the rugged, mountainous south and the expansive, low-lying plains that stretch across the north toward the Ural Mountains.

Geographically, Europe is a peninsula of the larger Eurasian landmass. A useful way to visualize its structure is to draw a line from the base of the Jutland peninsula to the Adriatic Sea. To the west, the continent is characterized by a high proportion of coastline, navigable rivers, and submerged continental shelves. To the east, the landscape opens into the vast European Plain, which spans from the Baltic and White seas to the Black, Azov, and Caspian seas.

The continent's relief is highly varied. While the northern and central regions are dominated by low-lying plains—often below 600 feet in elevation—the southern regions are defined by the dramatic peaks of the Cenozoic orogeny. Here, mountains like the Alps, Pyrenees, and the Sierra Nevada reach heights exceeding 11,000 feet, with Mont Blanc standing as the continent's highest point at 15,771 feet. In contrast, the lowest point is found at the Caspian Depression, which sits 95 feet below sea level.

Unlike North or South America, Europe lacks a continuous north-south mountain barrier, a feature that has historically facilitated movement and access into the western part of the continent. The landscape is further shaped by glacial deposits in the north, such as the Valdai Hills and the Pripet Marshes, and windblown loess deposits that stretch from eastern Britain to Ukraine. These diverse physical features—from the fjord-cut coasts of Scandinavia to the fertile plains of the Danube—create a complex mosaic that has shaped human settlement for millennia.
