How a Dutch football club adopted a city's coat of arms as its identity
In short: Founded in 1902 as Be Quick, this Deventer-based club transformed into the Go Ahead Eagles in 1971. The name change, suggested by coach Barry Hughes, honored the eagle featured on the city of Deventer's official coat of arms, marking a new era for the professional side of the organization.
The club originally began as Be Quick, established by the Hollander brothers in 1902. By 1905, the Dutch Football Association requested a name change to Go Ahead to prevent confusion with other teams. The club enjoyed significant early success, securing four national championships between 1917 and 1933. During the interwar period, they dominated the Eastern league, winning the regional title fifteen times, including an eight-year streak from 1916 to 1923.
Following the introduction of professional football in 1954, the club experienced mixed fortunes. A major milestone occurred on 7 October 1962, when they achieved their largest victory, defeating Roda JC 11–1. By 1963, they reached the top-tier Eredivisie, where they remained for twenty-four years. The 1967–68 season marked a high point, with the team finishing third behind giants Ajax and Feyenoord. In 1971, the professional department separated from the parent club, officially adopting the suffix Eagles.
The club has faced financial instability, notably in November 2003, when investor support saved the team in exchange for 80% of its shares. Ownership shifted again in 2019 when Alex Kroes acquired that stake, eventually selling it to Kees Vierhouten in 2022. Despite these transitions, the club remains a fixture in Dutch football, recently celebrating a historic achievement by winning their first KNVB Cup in April 2025.
The club maintains a fierce rivalry with PEC Zwolle, known as the IJssel-derby due to their proximity to the river IJssel. While they have navigated various relegations and promotions, their legacy includes producing notable talent like Marc Overmars and Erik ten Hag. Today, the Go Ahead Eagles continue to compete at the highest level, carrying a name that bridges their professional evolution with the historic symbols of their home city.
