How a British breakfast television programme became the most complained about show in history
In short: Good Morning Britain is a staple of British morning television, known for its mix of news, politics, and heated debates. Yet, the programme has faced intense scrutiny, including a record-breaking number of viewer complaints following a presenter's controversial remarks about a high-profile royal interview, leading to his sudden departure.
Launched on 28 April 2014, Good Morning Britain replaced the cancelled programme Daybreak. Broadcast live on ITV, the show follows a magazine-style format, delivering news, weather, and interviews with politicians and celebrities. While it serves as a daily information hub, it has cultivated a reputation for confrontational discussions. The programme has frequently adapted its schedule to cover major events, such as the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, the 2016 Brussels bombings, and various United States presidential elections.
The show's history is marked by significant personnel changes and operational shifts. In 2015, Piers Morgan joined as a permanent presenter, becoming a central figure in the programme's often volatile dynamic. His tenure was punctuated by controversy, including a 2020 incident involving accusations of racism regarding comments about a Chinese dairy advertisement, which drew over 1,500 complaints to Ofcom. Despite these tensions, the show continued to evolve, moving its production to Television Centre in 2018 and expanding its reach to the United States via the streaming service BritBox.
The most significant turning point occurred in March 2021, following the broadcast of an interview with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. After Morgan expressed disbelief regarding the Duchess's comments about her mental health, he engaged in a heated on-air exchange with weather presenter Alex Beresford. Morgan subsequently walked off the set and, shortly after, ITV announced his immediate departure. The incident triggered an Ofcom investigation, with the episode receiving 57,121 complaints by 17 March 2021. This total made it the most complained-about programme since Ofcom was established in 2003, highlighting the intense public engagement and polarization that defined this era of the show.
