A psychedelic detour into a fictionalized 1960s London
In short: Released in 1999, this expansion shifted the Grand Theft Auto series from its original three cities to a single, stylized British setting. While critics debated its gameplay improvements, the pack earned acclaim for its period-accurate sound and its immersive, seamy atmosphere of the hippie era.
Developed by Rockstar Canada, Grand Theft Auto Mission Pack #1: London 1969 arrived in April 1999 for PC and PlayStation. Unlike the expansive settings of the base game, this expansion focused on a single, fictionalized version of London during the late 1960s. It introduced period-specific aesthetics, such as new vehicles and British slang—replacing the standard 'Busted' with 'Nicked'—and featured the voice of novelist John Berger as the Crisp Twins. The game's assets were created using GTACars, a third-party modding utility. Additionally, the PlayStation port was managed by Runecraft.
The expansion received mixed critical reception. While some reviewers, such as those from GameSpot, felt it failed to improve significantly upon the original game's mechanics and graphics, others praised its audio. IGN and Eurogamer highlighted the soundtrack and retro '60s sound as standout features. Despite these criticisms, the pack achieved commercial success, topping the UK charts during its first two weeks of availability. GameRankings assigned the PC version an average score of 75%, whereas the PlayStation version received a 69% rating. One critic described the experience as a short-lived romp through the seamy side of British nightlife.
The expansion's release was part of a broader rollout by Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Following the initial release, a second freeware expansion, London 1961, was released in July 1999. In 2000, a standalone 'Special Edition' was released for PlayStation in the United Kingdom, allowing players to experience the game without the original Grand Theft Auto disc. The initial release was originally scheduled for April 1999. This expansion was marketed as the first add-on for the PlayStation console.
