A neon-soaked descent into the underworld of Liberty City
In short: In the fictional metropolis of Liberty City, nightclub impresario Anthony "Gay Tony" Prince is fighting to stay afloat. Amidst mounting debt and assassination attempts, his bodyguard Luis Fernando Lopez must navigate a dangerous web of Mafia families, Russian crime lords, and stolen diamonds to ensure Tony's survival.
Occurring alongside Grand Theft Auto IV, The Ballad of Gay Tony broadens the Liberty City landscape—a New York City analogue—and the adjacent state of Alderney, which mirrors New Jersey. The plot tracks Luis Fernando Lopez, a former drug trafficker of Dominican-American descent turned bodyguard, as he handles the turbulent affairs of his associate, Anthony "Gay Tony" Prince. This expansion is the second of two episodic add-ons for the 2008 title. It was initially released for the Xbox 360 in 2009.
The plot is driven by Tony's struggle to manage his clubs, Maisonette 9 and Hercules, while facing heavy debts to the Ancelotti crime family and Mori Kibbutz. The storyline also concludes a diamond-related subplot spanning the trilogy. This narrative thread involves high-stakes theft and betrayal, including a failed $2 million diamond deal and a pursuit of the Russian crime lord Ray Bulgarin, who is revealed to be the original owner of the stolen gems. The narrative also involves the character Rocco Pelosi, an enforcer for the Ancelotti family. Additionally, real estate developer Yusuf Amir assists Luis in his pursuit of Bulgarin.
Beyond the central story, the expansion introduces various side jobs and activities. Players can engage in Drug Wars, Triathlon Races, and club management, where Luis acts as a bouncer. Other activities include BASE jumping, golfing at a driving range, and even air hockey. While the game received generally favorable reviews, it was specifically noted for its depiction of its titular LGBT character, who was later described by Complex as the "hot mess of the GTA series." Players can also participate in street racing and various drinking games. Furthermore, the game features a scoring system to measure mission performance.
