How Rockstar built a digital New York using 100,000 photographs
In short: When developing Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar North aimed for a level of realism that redefined the series. To capture the essence of Liberty City, the team conducted extensive field research in New York, documenting the city through a massive collection of over 100,000 photographs and several hours of video footage.
Released in 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV marked a significant stylistic shift for the franchise, moving toward a more detailed and realistic tone. Unlike its predecessors, the game avoided heavy cinematic influences in favor of an original narrative approach. This focus on immersion extended to the environment; the developers prioritized the world as the most important element of the game, designing a setting that felt dense and lived-in. This ambitious project was shared among various Rockstar studios globally. The resulting shift toward realism was a departure from previous entries' cinematic styles.
Liberty City serves as the setting, a fictionalised version of New York City divided into four boroughs: Algonquin (Manhattan), Bohan (The Bronx), Dukes (Queens), and Broker (Brooklyn). The map features the adjacent state of Alderney, modeled after New Jersey. While the map was not the largest in the series, developers achieved a comparable sense of scope through its high level of detail and verticality. Players begin their journey by exploring only a limited number of areas, such as Bohan and Broker. As the storyline unfolds, additional islands become accessible for exploration.
The production of this virtual metropolis was a massive undertaking, with the development budget climbing to over US$100 million. This investment helped the title become one of the most significant games of the seventh generation. A massive commercial success, the title made US$310 million during its initial day and US$500 million within its first week, eventually surpassing 25 million units sold by 2013. The game's massive impact was reflected in its record-breaking sales figures. It remains one of the most expensive video games ever produced.
