From Mughal retreat to world-class ski destination: the evolution of Gulmarg
In short: High in the Pir Panjal Range, Gulmarg transforms from a lush 'meadow of flowers' into a premier winter sports hub. Once a summer sanctuary for Mughal emperors and British officials, this Himalayan hill station now hosts world-class skiing and a massive igloo cafe.
Located inside the Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary, this Western Himalayan spot reaches an elevation of 2,650 m (8,690 ft). The area's landscape is defined by a cup-shaped valley and soil composed of glacial and lacustrine deposits, alongside moraines from the Pleistocene epoch. These nutrient-rich grounds support vibrant spring meadows filled with daisies, buttercups, and forget-me-nots. The region's history is a layered tapestry of shifting powers. Originally known to locals as Gaurimarg, or 'path of goddess Gauri,' it was renamed Gulmarg ('meadow of flowers') by Yousuf Shah Chak during his rule from 1579 to 1586. The site transitioned from a Mughal summer retreat—where Emperor Jahangir collected wild flowers—to a recreational hub for British Raj civil servants in the 19th and early 20th centuries, who established three golf courses and a ski club in 1927.
Modern Gulmarg is defined by its infrastructure and sports. The Gulmarg Gondola, a two-stage ropeway built by the French company Pomagalski, is the second-highest in the world. Its first phase, connecting Gulmarg to Kongdori, opened in May 1998, while the second phase reaching toward Apharwat Peak was completed in 2011. Despite facing insurgency in the 1990s, the area has recovered, becoming a major destination for skiing, snowboarding, and even heli-skiing, which was introduced in the mid-1980s.
The town's demographic profile is highly specialized; according to the 2011 census, it had a population of 1,965, with a remarkably high literacy rate of 99.24%. Most residents are tied to the seasonal tourism industry rather than being permanent inhabitants.
