From Colombian second division to a record-breaking €16 million transfer
In short: Few players traverse the footballing map as rapidly as Gustavo Puerta. In just a few years, the Colombian midfielder has moved from the second tier of Colombian football to winning the Bundesliga and securing a historic, high-value move to Greece.
Born in La Victoria, Colombia, in 2003, Puerta's rise is a story of rapid ascent and significant financial milestones. His professional journey began in 2021 with Bogotá in the Categoría Primera B. By January 2023, he secured a move to Bayer Leverkusen for a reported €2 million—a fee that equaled the record for a player moving directly from the Colombian second division to Europe.
His time in Germany saw him part of Xabi Alonso's historic 2023–24 squad, which achieved an unbeaten Bundesliga title. While he also spent time on loan at 1. FC Nürnberg and Hull City, his career has been marked by high-stakes transitions. At Hull, a transfer embargo by the English Football League prevented a permanent move, forcing his return to Leverkusen before his next major leap.
In 2025, Puerta joined Racing Santander, where he helped the club secure the Segunda División title and promotion to La Liga. This success preceded a massive move in September 2026 to Olympiacos. The transfer, reported at a €16 million release clause with total costs reaching approximately €20 million, represents the highest fee ever paid by a Greek club.
On the international stage, Puerta has transitioned from captaining Colombia's U-20 side to becoming a vital component of Néstor Lorenzo's senior squad. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, his statistical impact was notable, including a 92 per cent pass completion rate and leading the Colombian squad in ball carries that resulted in shots or chances.
