Hanko: The southernmost tip of Finland that once served as a Russian naval outpost
In short: Known as the Riviera of Finland, this coastal town features over 90 islands and a unique climate moderated by the Baltic Sea. Beyond its sandy beaches and summer festivities, Hanko holds a complex history of imperial spa culture, granite exports, and a forced wartime lease to the Soviet Union.
Located on the southernmost point of continental Finland, Hanko has long been a strategic maritime crossroads. Sailors documented their presence here as early as the 15th century, leaving petroglyphs on the island of Hauensuoli. By the late 18th century, Sweden began fortifying the peninsula, though these defenses were later seized by Russia in 1809 and destroyed during the Crimean War. The town itself was officially established in 1874, following the 1872 completion of the railway connecting it to Hyvinkää.
During the late 19th century, the area flourished as a luxury spa destination for the Russian nobility, leaving behind architectural landmarks like the Hotel Regatta. Simultaneously, the town became a vital industrial hub; its high-quality granite was exported globally to construct iconic buildings in Helsinki and St. Petersburg. For many Finns, however, the port is remembered as the primary departure point for emigrants seeking a new life in North America during the turn of the 20th century.
The town's 20th-century history was defined by conflict. Following the Winter War in 1940, the Soviet Union secured a 30-year lease on the peninsula for use as a naval base, though they evacuated the area by December 1941. This lease was formally renounced in 1947. Today, the town balances this heavy past with a vibrant summer culture, hosting events like the Hangon Regatta and the Music Festival. Its climate remains distinct from the rest of the country, offering milder winters and cooler summers thanks to the moderating influence of the Baltic Sea.
