The massive river that defines the heart of a global metropolis
In short: Spanning 1.2 kilometers in width, the Han River does more than just divide Seoul. It served as a strategic redoubt for ancient kingdoms and provided the vital trade routes that allowed a capital to flourish. Today, it remains the centerpiece of one of the world's most rapid economic transformations.
The Han River's significance is deeply rooted in its geography. Rising in the western slopes of the Taebaek Mountains, the river flows westward through provinces including Gangwon, Gyeonggi, and North Chungcheong before reaching the Yellow Sea. For centuries, its navigable waters were essential for transporting grain, taxes, and goods, making the site ideal for the establishment of a capital. In 1394, General Yi Seong-Gye founded Seoul as the capital of the Joseon dynasty, utilizing the river's natural defensive advantages and its position within a topographic basin surrounded by 1,000-foot hills.
The river's identity has shifted through many names across Korean history. In the ancient Goguryeo period, it was known as Arisu—a term meaning 'great water'—and is recorded on the Gwanggaeto Stele from 414 AD. The Baekje kingdom referred to it as Ungniha, while the Silla kingdom used names like Wangbongha. The modern 'Han' name likely emerged during the era when Baekje interacted with China's Eastern Jin Dynasty. This long history is reflected in the river's basin, where Neolithic artifacts from sites like Amsa-dong reveal that humans have been utilizing the river for fishing and foraging for millennia.
Beyond its historical role, the river is synonymous with the 'Miracle on the Han River,' a term describing South Korea's rapid economic growth. Since the 1970s, the area south of the river, known as Gangnam, has seen extensive development. This affluent district now contains more than half of Seoul's population and provides half of the city's local tax income. While the city's boundaries have expanded significantly since the 1948 founding of South Korea, the river remains the defining feature of the landscape, even as modern expressways and urban sprawl reshape its banks.
