The high-seated carriage that revolutionized London's crowded streets
In short: Before the era of the taxi, the hansom cab dominated the streets of London. Designed for speed and stability, this two-wheeled marvel solved a dangerous problem: how to transport passengers safely through chaotic urban traffic without the driver being thrown from their seat.
York-born architect Joseph Hansom patented the initial 'Hansom Safety Cab' in 1834, aiming to merge velocity and security via a low centre of gravity. However, the initial design proved problematic. Positioned precariously atop the front roof, the driver faced extreme peril; a stumble from the horse or a broken wheel could throw them onto the road, sometimes fatally. Furthermore, the original two-wheeled version was often too heavy to be commercially successful.
A significant redesign arrived in 1836, when John Chapman introduced a version that placed the driver on an elevated seat behind the passenger compartment. This shift not only improved stability during cornering and overtaking but also helped prevent passengers from "bilking" drivers by leaving without paying. While Chapman and his investor, Gillett, patented this improved design, the vehicles continued to be known by the original designer's name. This configuration became the most common vehicle for hire in London and was eventually exported to the US, Europe, and other British colonies.
The hansom cab's design was highly specialized. Passengers sat on a single cross-seat facing forward, with their legs protected by folding wooden doors and knee flaps to prevent splashing mud. To enhance the experience, some owners, such as Lord Shrewsbury and Lord Lonsdale, upgraded their fleets with brass fittings and quiet-running rubber tires, earning them the nickname "Gondolas of London." Though horse-drawn cabs were widely used until the introduction of petrol taximeters around 1908, the era of the hansom cab finally drew to a close in London in 1947, when the last license for a horse-drawn cab was relinquished.
