Is there a hidden physical advantage in winning the US presidency?
In short: A persistent political legend claims that the taller candidate almost always secures victory. From 1900 to 1968, the taller major-party candidate won every single election. But does height actually drive electoral success, or is this just a persistent piece of American political folklore?
The 'tall candidate advantage' is a staple of American political lore, appearing in everything from 1950s dystopian fiction to psychological studies. Some accounts suggest an unbroken streak of taller winners from 1/1/1900 until 1972, when Richard Nixon—who was slightly shorter than George McGovern—broke the pattern. Other sources claim the trend held until 1968, noting that the taller candidate won every race in that period.
However, modern research suggests the reality is more nuanced. Research from 2013 revealed that although much taller contenders often secured more popular votes, their chances of winning the presidency remained unchanged; tall victors appeared no more frequent than random luck would predict. Interestingly, the study also noted that the probability of the taller candidate winning has actually increased in recent years, which can skew analyses that only look at recent election cycles.
The physical extremes of the presidency are equally striking. Abraham Lincoln remains the tallest president at approximately 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm), while James Madison stands as the shortest at 5 feet 4 inches (163 cm). The mean stature for the 45 U.S. presidents stands at about 5 feet 11 inches (180 cm). While height is often discussed as a factor of perceived leadership, the data shows that significant height gaps, such as the 12-inch difference between Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in 1860, do not guarantee a specific outcome.
