The first woman to lead Denmark and the Social Democrats
In short: Helle Thorning-Schmidt shattered political glass ceilings in Denmark. After serving in the European Parliament, she rose to become the nation's first female prime minister, navigating complex coalition politics and significant economic reforms before transitioning to global leadership roles in the NGO and tech sectors.
Born in Rødovre in 1966, Thorning-Schmidt’s political ascent was marked by a series of historic firsts. After studying political science at the University of Copenhagen and specializing in public administration at the College of Europe, she joined the Social Democratic Party in 1993. She first entered the European Parliament in 1999, later returning to the Danish Folketing in 2005 to replace Mogens Lykketoft as party leader. She attended Ishøj Gymnasium before graduating in 1985. Her father, Holger, was a lecturer in mathematics and national economics.
Her tenure as Prime Minister, beginning on 3 October 2011, was defined by a centrist compromise agenda. She managed a four-party coalition that secured 89 seats out of the 179-seat parliament. During her term, her government implemented tax reforms designed to increase labour output by lowering tax rates for high income earners, a move that saw tax revenue rise from 831,172 million Krone in 2011 to 954,473 million Krone by 2015. Her administration also worked to roll back certain anti-immigration laws. She also faced challenges from the Red-Green Alliance during her time in office.
Thorning-Schmidt’s career extended far beyond Danish borders. Following her departure from domestic politics in 2016, she served as the CEO of Save the Children until 2019. Since 2020, she has held high-profile international roles, including co-chair of the Meta Oversight Board and membership in the World Health Organization's Pan-European Commission on Health and Sustainable Development. Her influence remains significant in global governance and corporate oversight. Additionally, she was once proposed as a special envoy for peace in Libya. She also serves on the board of trustees for Friends of Europe.
