How three fictional hockey goons became an enduring, real-world cultural phenomenon
In short: The Hanson Brothers, a trio of brawling, bespectacled siblings from the 1977 film Slap Shot, transcended their fictional origins to become a legitimate touring act. Despite their humble beginnings as minor league cut-rate acquisitions, these characters sparked a decades-long legacy that influenced everything from professional wrestling to modern television.
The Hanson Brothers—Dave, Steve, and Jeff—were inspired by the real-life Carlson siblings, who played for the North American Hockey League's Johnstown Jets in the 1974-75 season. While Steve and Jeff Carlson portrayed themselves in the film, the role of Dave Hanson was played by teammate David Hanson because Jack Carlson was unavailable during production. The characters, defined by their thick black-rimmed glasses and penchant for violence, were written by Nancy Dowd, the sister of fellow player Ned Dowd, who also appeared in the movie.
The transition from screen to reality began in 1993, sixteen years after the film's release, when Steve Carlson was asked to organize a reunion to boost ticket sales for the Memphis Riverkings. The event sold out, as did a subsequent appearance for the Capital District Islanders. At their peak, the trio made about 90 appearances annually across the United States, Canada, and Europe, even securing a sponsorship with Budweiser. This success drew criticism from Nancy Dowd, who argued the appearances violated her author's rights, though Dave Hanson maintained that their public interactions were lighthearted and helped preserve the film's legacy.
The cultural footprint of the Hansons remains significant. They were inducted into the Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame in 2015 and have inspired various homages, including the Dudley Brothers in professional wrestling, a trio of characters in the series Shoresy, and lookalikes employed by the Cleveland Monsters. Although the group ceased touring together in 2020 due to personal differences, their influence persists through the original film and its two sequels, released in 2002 and 2008, which remain staples for hockey players on road trips.
