In short: Henderson, Nevada, began as a vital industrial hub for the Allied war effort, producing a quarter of the nation's magnesium. After a near-collapse at the war's end, the city reinvented itself through master-planned communities and high-tech manufacturing, evolving from a temporary wartime town into a thriving metropolitan center.

Henderson’s origins are rooted in the urgent demands of World War II. In 1941, the federal government commissioned Basic Magnesium Incorporated to build a massive industrial complex in the Nevada desert. Chosen for its strategic location between mountain ranges and proximity to Hoover Dam power, the site became a critical manufacturing hub for airplane engines and munitions. By 1942, the plant was operational, drawing 15,000 workers to the area and establishing the foundation for what would eventually become the city of Henderson.

The city’s survival was far from guaranteed. When the war ended, the plant ceased production, triggering a mass exodus of employees and threatening the town with total dissolution. It was saved only by the intervention of the Nevada Legislature in 1946, which authorized the purchase of the industrial infrastructure. Henderson was officially incorporated in 1953 with a population of 7,500. The city later faced another turning point in 1988, when a catastrophic chemical explosion at the PEPCON plant leveled parts of the area, leading to a complete overhaul of local industrial safety and emergency protocols.

Today, Henderson has shed its singular focus on heavy industry to become a diverse economic hub. It boasts a population of over 317,000 and attracts advanced sectors like logistics, financial services, and media production. With a higher concentration of degree-holding residents than its neighbors, the city hosts major operations for companies like Google, Levi Strauss, and TIMET. From its origins as a temporary Basic Townsite to its current status as a master-planned residential and business destination, Henderson’s trajectory demonstrates a remarkable capacity for reinvention.
