In short: Born from the rival World Hockey Association, the Edmonton Oilers defied the NHL's rejection to build a legendary dynasty. From a strategic loophole used to keep Wayne Gretzky to five Stanley Cup titles, their rise redefined professional hockey excellence in North America.

The Oilers' path to greatness began with a rebellion. After being rebuffed by the NHL, founders W. D. "Wild Bill" Hunter and Charles Allard turned to the upstart World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1971. Originally intended to be a dual-city Alberta franchise, the team became the Alberta Oilers before settling on their current name. Their entry into the NHL in 1979 was secured through a clever legal maneuver: owner Peter Pocklington used a 21-year personal services contract to protect Wayne Gretzky during the NHL–WHA merger, forcing the league to admit the franchise.

Once in the NHL, the Oilers transformed from a mediocre expansion side into a dominant force. Led by the strategic mind of coach Glen Sather, who joined the team in 1976, the franchise secured five Stanley Cup championships between 1984 and 1990. This era included remarkable individual feats, such as Gretzky becoming the first player to reach 200 points in a season during 1982–83, and the team becoming the first to score 400 goals in a single season.

The Oilers' legacy is defined by both extreme highs and prolonged droughts. While they are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships won since the 1967 expansion, they also hold the record for the longest division title drought in North American major professional sports, having not won one since 1987. Despite recent struggles, the franchise remains a cornerstone of Alberta sports, maintaining a fierce rivalry with the Calgary Flames known as the "Battle of Alberta."
