In short: As the first of the Type 45 class, HMS Daring marked a significant shift in British naval capability. Launched in 2006, this air-defence destroyer has navigated complex sea trials, international anti-piracy operations, and extensive technical refits. Discover the history and engineering milestones of this formidable vessel and its enduring legacy.

HMS Daring, the seventh ship to bear the name, represents a major technological leap for the Royal Navy as the lead vessel of the Type 45 class. Construction began in March 2003 at the Govan shipyard on the River Clyde, and the ship was launched in February 2006. Following her commissioning in July 2009, she underwent rigorous testing, including trials for her Long Range Radar and weapon systems. By 2011, she was fully equipped with Phalanx CIWS and had conducted her first Sea Viper missile launch.

The ship's operational history is extensive, spanning global deployments from the Persian Gulf to the Pacific. In 2012, she served as the command ship for international anti-piracy efforts in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Her versatility was further demonstrated in 2013 when she transitioned from participating in the Five Power Defence Arrangements exercise to providing humanitarian aid following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. These missions highlighted the destroyer's role in both combat-related operations and international disaster response.

Maintaining such a complex vessel requires significant upkeep. After years of service, Daring entered a major refit period starting in 2020 to undergo the Power Improvement Project, which involved installing new generators at the Cammell Laird shipyard. This process kept the ship out of active service for several years, with the vessel returning to Portsmouth in January 2023 for final regeneration. By February 2026, the Royal Navy anticipated her return to the active fleet, marking the culmination of a long and necessary technical overhaul.
