In short: HMS Invincible was a centerpiece of British naval power for decades, serving in the Falklands, the Balkans, and Iraq. Despite persistent claims from Argentine media that the ship was sunk during the 1982 conflict, the vessel remained operational until 2005, eventually meeting its end in a Turkish scrapyard.

Launched in 1977, HMS Invincible was the lead ship of her class, designed as an anti-submarine warfare carrier. Her construction at Barrow-in-Furness was marked by delays, and she was not commissioned until July 1980. The ship featured a distinctive ski-jump ramp at the forward end of her flight deck, a design choice that allowed Sea Harrier jets to take off with heavier payloads while reserving space for helicopter operations. Over her service life, this ramp angle was increased from 6.5 to 12 degrees to improve efficiency.

The ship's most famous deployment was the 1982 Falklands War. During this campaign, she carried nuclear depth bombs until early May, when they were removed while in the South Atlantic. Argentine forces repeatedly claimed to have damaged or sunk the carrier, most notably during an air attack on 30 May 1982. However, no evidence of such damage has ever been produced. British tactics, including low-level transit for aircraft to disguise the carrier's position, effectively shielded the ship from the Exocet missile attack, which instead targeted a group of escorts 40 miles away.

Following the war, Invincible underwent significant modifications. Her Sea Dart missile system was eventually removed to enlarge the flight deck, and her defensive armament evolved from Phalanx systems to Thales Goalkeeper CIWS. She served as a flagship in the Yugoslav Wars and supported operations in Iraq. By 2005, she was decommissioned, and after a failed attempt to sell her for use as a floating school, she was sold to Leyal Ship Recycling in 2011. She arrived at the Aliağa yard in Turkey for dismantling in April 2011.
