How Howard Jones transformed from a metalcore vocalist into a resilient mental health advocate
In short: Howard Jones is a defining voice in metalcore, known for his emotive range and powerful screams. Beyond his musical success with Killswitch Engage and Light the Torch, Jones has navigated profound personal battles with anxiety, depression, and type 2 diabetes, eventually becoming a vocal advocate for mental health awareness.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970, Howard Jones was introduced to metal by a high school friend at age 14 or 15. His early career included the band Driven and Blood Has Been Shed, but he achieved widespread recognition after joining Killswitch Engage in 2002. His tenure with the band saw the release of the gold-certified The End of Heartache and the platinum-certified As Daylight Dies. His introspective lyrics and ability to blend piercing screams with clean, powerful singing helped broaden the band’s emotional range and mainstream appeal.
Despite his professional success, Jones faced severe personal challenges. He struggled with anxiety and depression for years, reaching a crisis point in 2009 when he contemplated suicide. He also battled type 2 diabetes, which worsened due to the demands of touring and once left him in a coma for three days. These health issues led to his departure from Killswitch Engage in 2012. Since then, he has managed his diabetes through diet and exercise and has become open about his mental health journey, even collaborating with his former band on the 2019 song 'The Signal Fire' to raise awareness.
Jones has remained a prolific musician, forming the supergroup Devil You Know—later renamed Light the Torch—and collaborating on projects like SION and Burn Eternal. His approach to songwriting is deeply immersive; he often isolates himself from other entertainment to focus entirely on his craft. Today, he is widely recognized as one of the genre's finest vocalists, frequently cited in lists of the best clean singers in metalcore and the greatest replacement singers in heavy music history. His journey reflects a shift from internal struggle to a renewed, transparent dedication to his art.
