Why this industrial hub in Hubei is known as the Southern Cornucopia
In short: Huangshi, a prefecture-level city in southeastern Hubei, serves as a vital logistics and transportation center along the Yangtze River. Beyond its strategic location, the region is celebrated for its immense mineral wealth, earning it a nickname that reflects its diverse and abundant natural resources, from iron to rare metals.
Located 100 kilometers southeast of Wuhan, Huangshi sits along the southwestern bank of the Yangtze River. Its geography is defined by hills, small mountains, and a network of lakes. The city’s history is deeply intertwined with its landscape; the people of Huang were forced to relocate to this region during the Han dynasty after their original state was destroyed in 648 BC. Today, the city spans over 4,500 square kilometers and maintains a sub-temperate climate with roughly 264 frost-free days per year.
The city is famously dubbed the Southern Cornucopia due to its vast mineral deposits. Its industrial foundation includes metals such as copper, manganese, gold, and zinc, alongside various other resources like limestone and sulfur. This geological richness has fueled a robust economy centered on metallurgy, manufacturing, and energy. Major enterprises like the Huaxin Cement Co. Ltd and Daye Steel Co. Ltd anchor the local industrial sector, which is supported by extensive rail and water transportation networks.
Huangshi has actively repurposed its industrial heritage for modern tourism. The Huangshi National Mining Park now occupies the site of a major iron mine that functioned from the late 1890s until its closure in 2000. Similarly, the historic Huaxin Cement plant has been transformed into a cultural park, preserving early 20th-century architectural heritage. These sites, alongside natural landmarks like Dongfang Mountain and Cihu Lake, offer a glimpse into the city's transition from a heavy industry powerhouse to a multifaceted urban center.
