In short: Located in north-central Anhui province, Huainan is a vital industrial hub known for its massive coal production and thermal power plants. Yet, beneath its modern infrastructure lies a deep cultural legacy, as the city is widely recognized as the historic birthplace of tofu, a staple that has traveled the globe.

Huainan is a prefecture-level city in China’s Anhui province, home to over 3 million people as of the 2020 census. Its geography is defined by the Huai River, with the urban core situated on the river's south bank, flanked by Gaotang Lake to the east and forested hills to the south. The city’s administrative structure is complex, comprising five districts and two counties, which are further subdivided into 66 township-level units. This region is a cornerstone of the Hefei Metropolitan Circle, serving as a critical node for both energy production and regional transport.

Historically, the name Huainan traces back to the Han-era Principality of Huainan. While the name has been used to describe different entities throughout history—including one of the Ten Kingdoms in 10th-century China—the modern city has carved out a distinct identity. It is famously celebrated as the hometown of tofu, a culinary contribution so central to its heritage that the city hosted the 17th China Tofu Cultural Festival in September 2010. This event included the National Bean Products Exhibition, highlighting the city's ongoing commitment to its traditional roots.

Economically, Huainan has long been a powerhouse for China’s energy sector. In 2006, the city produced 43.28 million tons of coal, cementing its reputation as a major production center. This industrial capacity is supported by a robust transportation network, including multiple railway stations that connect the city to high-speed lines like the Hefei–Bengbu and Shangqiu–Hangzhou routes. Beyond its industrial and historical significance, the city also serves as an educational hub, hosting several institutions such as the Anhui University of Science and Technology and Huainan Normal University, which contribute to the intellectual life of this evolving urban landscape.
