In short: Hurricane Laura didn't just strike the coast; it defied the usual rules of intensity. Despite crossing the rugged mountains of Hispaniola, the storm actually improved in structure. It eventually became one of the strongest hurricanes ever to make landfall in Louisiana, packing 150 mph winds and leaving a $23.3 billion trail of destruction.

Hurricane Laura was a standout of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, becoming the earliest twelfth named storm on record since 1851. It originated from a tropical wave off the West African coast on August 16 and underwent a period of rapid intensification on August 26. The system evolved into a Category 4 hurricane during this period, hitting a low of 937 mbar with top 1-minute sustained gusts of 150 mph (240 km/h). The storm's development was influenced by the Bermuda High, which steered it west-northwest. Moderate wind shear initially hindered its growth until it moved into more favorable conditions. It also surpassed the previous naming record set by Hurricane Luis in 1995.

The storm's path was notable for its resilience. After hitting the Lesser Antilles, the storm crossed Hispaniola, resulting in 31 fatalities in Haiti and 4 deaths in the Dominican Republic. Remarkably, the storm's overall structure improved despite interacting with the island's mountainous terrain. It then traversed Cuba, prompting the evacuation of over 260,000 people, before entering the Gulf of Mexico to reach its peak intensity. The storm's path also prompted the evacuation of 106,000 people in Santiago de Cuba Province. In the Caribbean, the storm forced the closure of all ports in the British Virgin Islands. It also triggered a flash flood warning for Jamaica on August 24.

When Laura made landfall near Cameron, Louisiana, on August 27, it tied with the 1856 Last Island hurricane as the strongest hurricane on record to hit the state. The impact was severe: a nearly 10-foot storm surge was recorded in Cameron Parish, and the storm caused 30 deaths in Louisiana alone. Total damages across southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas were estimated at $23.3 billion, with 81 total deaths recorded across the U.S. and Caribbean regions. The storm surge reached nearly 10 feet in Cameron Parish. It caused severe flooding and extreme damage to many houses across several parishes. The hurricane also resulted in at least 41 deaths within the United States.
