In short: Twenty-three male trainees entered a remote, three-floor forest complex for 113 days of intense competition. In this South Korean reality series, the difference between luxury living and a simple building is decided by a single vote. Success determines who stays in the I-Land and who is demoted to the Ground.

The I-Land survival system operates on a strict hierarchy of two distinct living spaces. The primary I-Land complex features modern amenities, including a gym, dance studios, and individual practice rooms. However, this space is capped at just 12 residents. Trainees who fail to secure their place are demoted to the 'Ground,' a much simpler facility consisting only of a dining area and a dance studio, requiring them to commute to the main complex at set times.

The mechanism for movement between these spaces is a complex interplay of peer and professional judgment. Initially, new arrivals must earn their way into the I-Land through a vote by existing contestants; receiving 12 or more hands raised is required for entry. As the competition progressed through its two parts, the power dynamics shifted. While the first part relied heavily on trainee and producer votes, the second part introduced significant global audience influence, fundamentally changing how contestants were eliminated.

The stakes of these evaluations were often extreme. During the first mission, the I-Landers received an average score of only 59, leading them to demote six members. In later missions, the introduction of 'dropout exemption cards'—awarded to the highest individual scorers—allowed trainees to strategically save others from demotion. This high-pressure environment ultimately culminated in the selection of seven members for the debut group, Enhypen, on September 18, 2020.
