In short: Known as Vanijya Nagari, or the commercial city, Hubli has evolved from an 11th-century settlement into a massive industrial hub. Today, it serves as the headquarters for the South Western Railway zone and hosts a sprawling network of small and medium industries, anchoring the economy of North Karnataka.

The history of Hubli is a layered narrative of trade and conquest. Originally known as Rayara Hubli, the city grew under the Vijayanagara Empire as a center for cotton, iron, and saltpeter trade. Its strategic importance invited constant turnover; it was looted by Shivaji in 1673, governed by the Nawab of Savanur, and later contested between the Marathas and Hyder Ali. The British influence began with a factory in the 17th century, but the city's modern industrial identity truly solidified in 1880 when the British established a railway workshop. This site eventually became the largest holder of EMD locomotives in India.

Geographically, Hubli sits at the intersection of the Malnad region and the Deccan plateau, a position that has bolstered its role as a regional trade center. Beyond its industrial base, the city is a significant educational hub, hosting institutions like the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences and KLE Technological University. Its connectivity is equally robust; the city lies on the Golden Quadrilateral and serves as a major node for the Indian Rail Network. The Hubli Junction railway station, recently renamed after Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji, is a testament to this, featuring a platform extension project that aimed to be the longest in the world.

The administration of the region has been defined by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), established in 1962 to unify the two cities. However, the relationship between the twin cities has been marked by tension, with residents of Dharwad frequently calling for a separate civic body due to claims of fund allocation favoring Hubli. This long-standing administrative arrangement reached a turning point on January 2, 2025, when the Karnataka state cabinet officially declared the separation of the two cities, paving the way for a new municipal corporation dedicated solely to Dharwad.
