The INDIA bloc: A major Indian opposition alliance formed to challenge the ruling government
In short: The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, or INDIA, emerged as a significant multi-party coalition designed to contest national elections against the ruling National Democratic Alliance. While its political maneuvers have dominated headlines, the bloc also made waves by nominating a former Supreme Court judge for the vice presidency in 2025.
The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) was established as a broad opposition front, bringing together a diverse array of political parties to challenge the governance and ideology of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The coalition's formation was marked by a series of high-level meetings across India, beginning with a proposal in Patna in June 2023 and culminating in the formal adoption of its name during a gathering in Bengaluru. By the time of its later deliberations in Mumbai, the alliance had focused on coordinating electoral strategies and establishing a committee to manage joint efforts.
Beyond its electoral ambitions, the alliance has engaged in significant national political activity. In August 2025, following the unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the INDIA bloc nominated B. Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the office. Reddy, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India known for his focus on constitutional idealism and civil liberties, was positioned by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge as an ideological alternative to the NDA's candidate, C.P. Radhakrishnan. Although Radhakrishnan ultimately won the election in September 2025, the nomination highlighted the bloc's attempt to elevate figures associated with judicial accountability.
The alliance's internal dynamics have been fluid, characterized by both strategic unity and individual shifts. While the bloc has sought to present a cohesive front on issues like electoral transparency and the protection of democratic institutions, it has also navigated the complexities of regional politics. For instance, the coalition has had to contend with the departure of key figures, such as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who initially participated in early meetings before realigning with the NDA. Despite these challenges, the INDIA bloc remains a central feature of India's contemporary political landscape, representing a concerted effort by opposition parties to consolidate their influence against the incumbent government.
