The world's first industrial airport was built to move cargo, not people
In short: Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport operates as a massive logistics engine rather than a passenger terminal. Developed as a collaboration between municipal leaders, federal regulators, and private real estate interests, this Texas facility serves as a critical hub for global freight giants like FedEx and Amazon Air.
Opened in December 1989, the facility was designed as a specialized industrial airport. Unlike traditional hubs, it avoids major commercial passenger traffic, focusing instead on cargo operations and general aviation. Its strategic location and infrastructure have attracted major tenants, including BNSF Railway, Bell Helicopter, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The airport covers 1,198 acres and features two long concrete runways, which were extended in a project completed in 2018 to allow heavily loaded cargo planes to reach Europe without stopping for fuel.
The airport's history is marked by regional tension. For years, it sat at the center of legal and political disputes between the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth. These conflicts often stemmed from a 1968 bond agreement that prohibited both cities from developing airports that could compete with Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Fort Worth officials consistently argued that Alliance was not a competitor because it did not offer passenger services, while Dallas leaders occasionally viewed the facility as a point of leverage in broader debates over regional aviation restrictions.
Beyond its role in logistics, the airport has hosted unique aviation milestones, such as the first U.S. visit of the Ilyushin Il-96 in 1993. It has also served as a backdrop for television production and a site for specialized maintenance. In 2022, the facility was renamed to honor Ross Perot, Sr., acknowledging the influence of the Perot family in its creation. Today, it remains a vital component of the North Texas economy, managing hundreds of daily aircraft operations that support global supply chains and industrial aviation needs.
