Can a hero's choice determine their destiny in a world of chaos?
In short: In the Infamous series, players navigate a high-stakes morality system known as Karma. By choosing to use superpowers for good or evil, players fundamentally alter the protagonist's abilities and the story's direction, facing consequences that range from fighting organized crime to battling entities that can destroy entire coastlines.
Developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony, the Infamous series explores the lives of "Conduits"—individuals with extraordinary abilities. The narrative centers on characters like Cole MacGrath, who gained electrical powers following a massive explosion in Empire City caused by the Ray Sphere. This device, capable of transferring the energy of thousands of lives to a single user, serves as a pivotal plot element in the first game.
The setting shifts across various American landscapes, including an Empire City resembling New York, a New Marais resembling New Orleans, and Seattle. As the story progresses from the 2009 debut through Infamous 2 and Infamous Second Son, the scale of conflict escalates. In the second installment, the destruction caused by a powerful being known as "The Beast" obliterates much of the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.
A core mechanic is the Karma meter, which tracks the player's moral choices. These decisions do not just affect the narrative but also dictate the specific set of powers available to the character. This system forces players to weigh the cost of their actions, such as whether to destroy or utilize the devastating Ray Sphere, or how to respond to agencies like the Department of Unified Protection (DUP), which labels conduits as bio-terrorists.
The franchise has expanded beyond the three main games into standalone expansions like Infamous: First Light and Infamous: Festival of Blood, as well as a six-issue comic book series by DC Comics. While a film adaptation was once planned with a seven-figure deal, no updates on the project have been made as of 2024.
