In short: Before he was an award-winning actor, Kochuvelu Surendran was learning the trade of tailoring to help his family survive financial hardship. This journey from a humble workshop in Thiruvananthapuram to starring in over 550 films illustrates a remarkable evolution from behind-the-scenes craftsmanship to front-of-camera mastery.

Born on March 16, 1956, Indrans began his professional life shaped by necessity. Facing financial difficulties at home, he joined his uncle to learn tailoring—a craft he later pursued with his brother, K. Jayakumar, opening a shop called Indran's Brothers Tailors in Kumarapuram. His entry into the arts was organic; he joined amateur clubs and performed in dramas before making his television debut on Doordarshan in the serial Kaliveedu.

His film career started in 1981 with Choothattam, where he simultaneously worked as a costume designer and an actor. For several years, he remained in the background, assisting producer TMN Charley with costume design while taking small acting roles. It wasn't until 1994 that he achieved a breakthrough with his comedic turn in CID Unnikrishnan B.A., B.Ed. His distinct lean figure and unique mannerisms made him a staple of Malayalam comedy throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

The latter half of Indrans' career marks a profound shift toward dramatic weight. He transitioned into serious character roles, notably in Mundrothuruth (2016), and began earning prestigious accolades for his range. These include the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor in 2018 for Aalorukkam and a Special Mention at the National Film Awards in 2023 for Home. His versatility is further cemented by his 2024 autobiography, Indradhanussu, which earned him the Cherukad Award.

By November 2021, Indrans had appeared in over 550 films. His career trajectory serves as a study in artistic longevity: moving from costume design to comedy, then into villainy (such as in Pottas Bomb), and finally into critically acclaimed dramatic leads like Oliver Twist.
