In short: Located in the Florida Panhandle, Jackson County is the only county in the state bordering both Alabama and Georgia. While its landscape is shaped by unique water features like the Chipola River, its history is marked by intense political struggle, racial violence, and a long, difficult path toward modern recovery.

Established in 1822 as the third county in the Florida Territory, Jackson County was named after Andrew Jackson, who served as the territory's first military governor. Originally stretching from the Choctawhatchee River to the Suwannee River, the county was gradually reduced in size as new counties were formed. Marianna, founded in 1821 by Robert Beveridge, eventually became the county seat in 1829 after local leaders successfully lobbied the legislature with offers of free land and funding for a new courthouse.

During the antebellum period, the region became a center for cotton production, relying heavily on the forced labor of enslaved African Americans. Following the Civil War, the county became a site of extreme political and racial conflict. During the Reconstruction era, the Ku Klux Klan exerted significant influence, leading to a period of guerrilla warfare known as the Jackson County War. Between 1869 and 1871, hundreds of Republican leaders and African Americans were assassinated, and local government officials were frequently intimidated or forced to resign.

The legacy of racial violence persisted well into the 20th century, with notable lynchings occurring as late as 1943. Today, the county is characterized by its rural nature, with 88.2% of its 47,319 residents living outside urban areas as of the 2020 census. The county's geography remains a defining feature, featuring the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola rivers, as well as the unique Jackson Blue Springs, where the Chipola River briefly flows underground before resurfacing.
