In short: Dayton, Ohio, is a landscape of industrial firsts. From the mechanical money drawer to the first sustained powered flight, this city served as a crucible for modern American innovation, transforming from a river port into a global hub for aviation and manufacturing.

Dayton's rise as an industrial powerhouse was fueled by its geography and early infrastructure. Originally a river port for shipping agricultural produce to New Orleans, the city saw a massive commercial surge in the mid-19th century. The opening of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1829, followed by the arrival of a railroad to Springfield in 1851, provided the logistical backbone for its growth. The city became a literal birthplace of modern commerce and transport. In 1879, James Ritty invented the mechanical money drawer in Dayton, which John Henry Patterson later perfected into the modern cash register. Just a few decades later, the city became the epicenter of the automotive revolution; Charles F. Kettering developed the automobile self-starter there, alongside ignition systems and electric lighting for farms.

The Wright brothers utilised this site for testing; having established a bicycle repair business within the town, they performed the trials resulting in the initial powered aircraft's managed, continuous flight during 1903. Today, Dayton remains a diversified urban complex. It serves as a national aviation center, a legacy of experimental aviation laboratories established during World Wars I and II and the 1946 establishment of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The city is now a major market and distribution center for a fertile agricultural region, manufacturing everything from aircraft parts and steel to computers and printing presses.
