In short: Jiaxing, a historic prefecture-level city in Zhejiang province, is defined by its deep roots in Neolithic agriculture and its status as a global textile hub. Yet, this canal-side city is most famous for a clandestine 1921 meeting on a South Lake boat that birthed the Chinese Communist Party.

Located between Shanghai and Hangzhou, Jiaxing has served as a strategic nexus for millennia. Its history is etched into its changing names, from the Spring and Autumn period's Zuili to the imperial-era designations like Youquan and Xiushui. The city’s identity is tied to the Grand Canal, which facilitated its growth as a center for silk production and leather exports. Even today, the city maintains a unique cultural ecosystem, including a dedicated preservation area for Zongzi, a traditional glutinous rice dish.

The city’s political significance surged in 1921 when delegates from the first congress of the Chinese Communist Party, having departed Shanghai, reconvened on a vessel in South Lake to finalize the party's establishment. This event transformed the lake into a prominent site for political education. Beyond its revolutionary history, Jiaxing preserves remnants of its imperial past, including the Zicheng citadel and restored neighborhoods like Meiwan and Yuehe, which blend historic architecture with modern tourism.

Modern Jiaxing is a powerhouse of industry and energy. In 2015, manufacturing accounted for 47% of its GDP, supported by sectors ranging from chemicals to electronics. It also hosts the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, China’s first self-designed nuclear facility. Despite rapid modernization, the city retains a distinct linguistic heritage; its local dialect belongs to the Northern Wu group, sharing close ties with Shanghainese and Suzhou dialect, while remaining unintelligible to speakers of Mandarin or Cantonese.

The city’s administrative structure is complex, overseeing seven county-level divisions and dozens of townships. It has evolved through various mergers and upgrades, particularly since the mid-20th century. Today, it serves as a vital transport hub, connected by high-speed rail and expressways, while continuing to honor its intellectual lineage, having been the home of notable figures such as the scholar Wang Guowei and the novelist Mao Dun.
