Jixi: The Chinese coal city that holds Asia's largest graphite reserves
In short: Located in Heilongjiang Province near the Russian border, Jixi is a major industrial hub defined by its massive coal deposits and history of resource extraction. Beyond its mining legacy, this city is a unique cultural crossroads, home to a significant Korean ethnic minority and the last working steam locomotives in China.
Jixi’s development is inextricably linked to its geology. With estimated coal reserves of about 8 billion tons, it ranks second among Heilongjiang’s prefectures. This resource wealth drove the city's growth throughout the 20th century, particularly after the establishment of the Jixi Mining Bureau in 1947. Beyond coal, Jixi holds the largest graphite reserves in all of Asia, totaling 780 million tons, which has helped diversify its industrial base into metallurgy and machinery.
The city's history reflects the turbulent shifts of the 20th century. During the Japanese occupation, the region was a site of brutal conflict, including the construction of the Hutou Fortress—the so-called Oriental Maginot Line. The area saw intense fighting during the final days of the Second World War, and later, the border region became the site of the 1969 Sino-Soviet conflict at Zhenbao Island. Today, these sites serve as historical markers, while the city maintains a unique cultural identity influenced by its proximity to Russia and its Korean ethnic minority.
Modern Jixi balances this heavy industrial heritage with a distinct local culture. The city is famous for its fusion cuisine, notably its cold noodles, which blend Korean and Northeastern Chinese traditions. While coal remains the backbone of the economic system, the city has expanded into pharmaceuticals, food manufacturing, and tourism. Visitors can explore the Jixi Museum or travel to the scenic Lake Xingkai, which the city shares with Russia, highlighting the region's transition from a closed frontier to a multifaceted prefecture.
