In short: Before he was a household name in Hindi cinema, a young man sold pens on the streets of Mumbai by mimicking film stars. This transition from odd jobs to becoming one of India's most recognized comedic icons reveals how raw talent can overcome severe financial hardship.

Johnny Lever, born John Prakash Rao Janumala in 1957, faced significant economic barriers early in life. After leaving school in the seventh grade due to family finances, he moved between Mumbai and Hyderabad. In Hyderabad's Yakutpura district, he began honing a unique style of comedy acting that would eventually define his career.

His path to stardom was unconventional. While working as a laborer at a Hindustan Unilever plant, he gained local fame by mimicking senior officers during company functions—an act so popular it gave him the nickname 'Johnny Lever.' He later used this name professionally after quitting the factory in 1981 to pursue full-time performance. He is now widely regarded as a pioneer of the stand-up comedy profession in India, having performed in musical shows and with the music direction duo Kalyanji-Anandji.

Lever's cinematic journey began in earnest in the mid-1980s. After touring with Amitabh Bachchan in 1982, veteran actor Sunil Dutt noticed his potential and cast him in 'Dard Ka Rishta.' Since then, he has appeared in more than 350 films, including major successes like 'Baazigar,' where his portrayal of the character 'Babulal' remains one of his most acclaimed works. Beyond the screen, he serves as the president of the Mimicry Artist Association Mumbai (MAAM) and has performed thousands of live shows globally.

His life took a spiritual turn following a personal crisis involving his son's health. After his son was diagnosed with a throat tumor, Lever stopped working in films to pray for a miracle. When doctors later found the cancer had vanished within ten days, he transitioned into a life as a preacher, citing the experience as a divine intervention.
