From a payment in marijuana to four consecutive Emmys, the career of John Larroquette
In short: Before he became a television icon, John Larroquette began his career in a horror classic, receiving payment in cannabis for his narration. He later dominated the sitcom landscape, setting records with consecutive awards, while navigating personal struggles that eventually informed his most critically acclaimed, albeit commercially difficult, television work.
Born in New Orleans in 1947, John Larroquette discovered his passion for performance during his final year of secondary education. His professional entry into Hollywood was unconventional; he provided the opening voiceover for the 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as a favor to director Tobe Hooper, accepting marijuana as his compensation. Following this, he secured his first regular series role in the 1970s military drama Baa Baa Black Sheep.
Larroquette achieved widespread recognition as Assistant District Attorney Dan Fielding on the NBC sitcom Night Court, which aired from 1984 to 1992. His portrayal was so impactful that he secured four consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series between 1985 and 1988, a feat that stood as a record at the time. By 1989, he requested to be excluded from further Emmy consideration. Decades later, he returned to the franchise for its 2023 revival, serving as the only original cast regular.
Beyond his comedic success, Larroquette channeled his personal history with alcoholism into The John Larroquette Show, a series he developed with Don Reo. Although the show struggled to capture a prime-time audience, ranking near 97th during its debut season, it earned significant critical praise. His versatility extended to the stage, where he earned a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his performance in a 2011 Broadway musical production. Throughout his career, he has balanced these roles with dramatic turns in series like The Practice, which earned him a fifth Emmy, and Boston Legal.
