In short: Located on the island of São Miguel, the John Paul II Ponta Delgada Airport serves as the primary hub for the Azores. Since its opening in the late 1960s, this vital infrastructure has evolved from a small regional connection point into a major international gateway for travelers across the Atlantic.

The airport, originally known as Aeroporto da Nordela, began operations in August 1969. Its construction was initiated following planning efforts that started in 1963, marking a significant shift from the previous facility at Santana. At its inception, the runway measured 1,800 metres, facilitating the first regular connections to the Portuguese mainland by 1971. The facility was later renamed in May 1995 to honor the 1991 visit of Pope John Paul II to the islands.

Today, the airport functions as the central hub for the SATA Group, encompassing both the inter-island carrier SATA Air Açores and the international operator Azores Airlines. Since April 2015, it has also served as a strategic base for Ryanair. Its reach extends beyond domestic routes to Lisbon, Porto, and Faro, connecting the Azores directly to various destinations across Europe and North America. This growth has been substantial, with passenger traffic climbing from 935,000 in 2011 to nearly 3.3 million by 2024.

Management of the site falls under the purview of ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, which assumed responsibility for the airport's concessions in December 1998. This transition, formalized under decree 404/98, empowered the organization to oversee the long-term development and infrastructure planning for the site. As the fifth largest facility within the ANA network, the airport remains a critical engine for the economic and social development of the region, handling not only passenger travel but also essential mail and cargo logistics for the local population.
