The metronome: the most important piece of musical advice ever received
In short: Before becoming one of the world's most celebrated progressive metal guitarists, John Petrucci was a child who nearly quit the instrument because he couldn't stay up late enough to practice. His path to mastery wasn't just about raw talent; it was built on a specific, disciplined technical foundation.
Born in Kings Park, New York, in 1967, Petrucci's musical journey began at age eight. He initially picked up the guitar because his older sister was permitted to stay up late to practice the organ, but he abandoned the instrument when he failed to secure similar late-night practice time. He returned to the guitar at age 12, eventually committing to a grueling six-hour daily practice regimen. A pivotal turning point occurred when a high school teacher suggested he begin practicing with a metronome—a piece of advice Petrucci cites as the most significant he ever received.
His development was further fueled by a combination of rigorous self-study and community engagement. Beyond his personal practice, he engaged in frequent jam sessions with various local musicians, which helped him develop his skills immensely. His influences were broad, ranging from classic rock icons like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC to progressive heavyweights such as Rush, Yes, and Iron Maiden. This diverse palette eventually led him to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he formed the band Majesty (later renamed Dream Theater) with childhood friends and future bandmates.
Today, Petrucci is recognized as a master of high-speed alternate picking, a technique he attributes to a 'strong sense of synchronization' between the hands. Because his skill is so esteemed, Petrucci joined the G3 tour as a third guitarist on seven occasions, surpassing every other guest player in appearances. While known for 'metal shredding,' he is equally respected for his ability to blend speed with emotive, slower soloing styles, using the seven-string electric guitar as a primary tool for both heavy riffing and extended melodic runs.
