In short: Kimya Dawson’s wobbly, authentic sound became the heartbeat of the 2007 film Juno. From cult-favorite Moldy Peaches tracks to a Grammy-winning soundtrack, her "sheepish and guileless" persona helped bridge the gap between homemade lo-fi recordings and mainstream Billboard success.

Born in 1972, American folk artist Kimya Dawson gained fame as Adam Green's partner in the anti-folk pair the Moldy Peaches. Her musical style is often described by critics as "primal" and "primitive," characterized by a "wobbly voice" and "chicken-scratched" guitar playing that evokes the feeling of a child riding a bicycle without training wheels.

The duo's 2001 song "Anyone Else but You" became a cultural touchstone when it was featured in the 2007 film Juno. The song's popularity was so significant that a cover by Michael Cera and Elliot Page for the same film reached the Billboard Hot 100. This success helped propel the Juno soundtrack to the top of the Billboard 200 and Soundscan charts, eventually winning a Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack in 2009.

Beyond her work with the Moldy Peaches, Dawson has maintained a prolific solo career, releasing seven solo studio albums including lo-fi, homemade projects and the children's album Alphabutt in 2008. She has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, ranging from Aesop Rock to The Mountain Goats. In 2019, Dawson shared that she had been impacted by gender dysphoria, adopting she/they/grandpa pronouns.

Dawson's career is marked by both extreme highs and lows. In 1998, she survived a near-fatal overdose in Port Townsend, Washington, waking from a coma the following day. Since the Moldy Peaches went on hiatus in 2004, she has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, continuing to release music under various names and collaborations.
