La Paz: A Desert Capital Built on Pearls, Science, and Ancient Maritime Exploration
In short: La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, is a desert city defined by its dramatic history and marine wealth. From early Spanish expeditions seeking pearls to its current status as a hub for Latin American marine biology, this coastal community thrives where the arid peninsula meets the Gulf of California.
The history of La Paz is marked by early, violent encounters between Spanish explorers and Indigenous inhabitants. In 1533, Fortún Ximénez led a mutinous expedition to the bay, where his crew discovered pearl oysters and abused the local population, leading to his death. Hernán Cortés arrived in 1535, naming the site Bahia de la Santa Cruz, but failed to establish a permanent colony. The name 'California' was later applied to the region, possibly as an insult to Cortés by his rivals.
Modern La Paz, founded in 1720, has evolved into a significant commercial and educational center. It is the state capital and home to three of Latin America’s leading marine biology institutes: UABCS, CIBNOR, and CICIMAR. This focus on marine science is supported by the city's location on the Gulf of California, which boasts exceptional biodiversity, including krill species like Nyctiphanes simplex that sustain local fisheries and attract diverse predators like whale sharks and sea lions.
The city experiences a subtropical hot desert climate, characterized by over 300 days of sunshine annually and cooling Coromuel winds that blow from the Pacific at night. With a 2020 census population of 250,141, La Paz serves as a vital hub for eco-tourism and regional commerce. Development along the 5 km Malecon Road has transformed the coastal front into a focal point for tourism, while the port of Pichilingue maintains essential ferry connections to the Mexican mainland.
