In short: The Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site defined by its extraordinary ecological intersection. Yet, its 2021 inscription remains deeply contentious. While the region shelters rare tigers and crocodiles, its path to international recognition was marked by allegations of forced displacement and the death of an activist.

Located along the border with Myanmar, this protected area spans three provinces in Western Thailand. It sits within the Tenasserim mountain range, a ridge of granite and limestone stretching down the Malay Peninsula. This unique geography creates a convergence zone where the Himalayan, Indochina, and Sumatran biological realms meet, resulting in a landscape dominated by evergreen, deciduous, and montane forests.

The site is a sanctuary for a staggering array of wildlife, including eight distinct species of cats. Among these are the endangered tiger and fishing cat, alongside the clouded leopard and marbled cat. The complex also provides a refuge for critically endangered Siamese crocodiles and endangered Asian elephants. Beyond its mammals, the area serves as a vital habitat for numerous bird species, overlapping with two designated Important Bird Areas.

Despite this ecological significance, the site’s 2021 inclusion on the World Heritage list was fraught with political friction. The Thai government had pursued this status since 2016, but faced intense scrutiny over its treatment of the indigenous S'gaw Karen people. Specifically, the government faced accusations of forcibly displacing residents from their village in the national park. The situation grew more severe with the 2014 murder of activist Porlajee Rakchongcharoen.

Just before the final decision at the World Heritage Committee’s 44th session, United Nations human rights experts formally requested a deferral, citing ongoing violations. Nevertheless, the nomination proceeded with backing from nations including China and Russia. This tension highlights the complex challenge of balancing international conservation goals with the protection of indigenous communities and human rights, leaving the site as both a biological treasure and a symbol of unresolved conflict.
