In short: Few players navigate the volatile highs and lows of international sport like Kusal Mendis. After rising through the youth ranks to become a mainstay of the national side, his career has been defined by record-breaking centuries, sudden suspensions, and a resilient return to leadership.

Born in 1995, Kusal Mendis followed a rapid trajectory from a standout schoolboy cricketer at Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa, to the international stage. His ascent was marked by early accolades, including being named the schoolboy cricketer of the 2013 season and the ODI batsman of the year for 2016–17. By 2014, he was already captaining the Sri Lankan Under-19 side. Before his senior debut, he appeared in only sixteen first-class matches. His early leadership roles also included captaining the national youth team.

Mendis's international career has been a study in extremes. He has achieved remarkable feats, such as becoming the youngest Sri Lankan to score a Test century against Australia in 2016 and joining Virat Kohli as the only player to reach 1,000 Test runs in the 2018 calendar year. He has also been a prolific force in shorter formats, notably leading Sri Lanka to a record-breaking T20I chase against Bangladesh. His prowess extends to the longer format, where he achieved his maiden first-class double-century in 2020. He also holds the distinction of being the 132nd player to represent Sri Lanka in Test cricket.

However, his path has not been without controversy or struggle. In 2021, he faced a one-year suspension from international cricket after breaching bio-secure protocols during a tour of England. He has also endured significant periods of poor form, including a stretch of 24 innings without a fifty. Despite these setbacks, Mendis has maintained his position at the summit of the game, eventually stepping up as the limited-overs captain following the injury of Dasun Shanaka during the 2023 World Cup. His leadership journey includes stints as vice-captain during tours to England and India. His latest role involves serving as the 2026 Lanka Premier League's Local Icon Player.
