In short: Breaking into Formula One is a feat of endurance and precision, but for Karun Chandhok, it was also a journey of cultural and sporting milestones. From becoming the youngest Asian champion to navigating the elite tiers of European racing, his career serves as a blueprint for Indian motorsport.

Born in Madras (now Chennai) in 1984 to Vicky Chandhok—a multi-time Indian rallying champion—Karun was raised in a lineage of speed. Following a victory in seven of ten Formula Maruti contests, he secured the Indian National Racing Championship during 2000. By 2001, he secured the Formula 2000 Asia championship, making history as the youngest ever Asian Formula Champion while driving for Team India Racing.

Chandhok’s progression through the European ladder was both prestigious and grueling. He spent years navigating the GP2 Series (now known as Formula 2), where he won a sprint race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and earned the "Best Driving Style" award in 2008. A pivotal moment occurred in November 2009, when he received his biggest career break: a call-up from Red Bull Racing to test at the Circuit de Catalunya. This led to his 2010 debut with Hispania Racing, making him only the second Indian driver to compete in Formula One.

Despite facing technical hurdles and inconsistent results during his F1 tenure—including a crash at the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix due to tarmac bumps—Chandhok remained a significant figure for the sport's expansion. In November 2009, he became the first Indian driver invited to join the British Racing Drivers' Club, a milestone facilitated by India's Commonwealth membership. His career also spanned Formula E with Mahindra Racing and endurance racing at the Le Mans 24 Hours, where his team finished sixth overall in 2012.

Today, Chandhok has transitioned into a prominent role as a broadcaster and analyst for Sky Sports F1, alongside positions on Motorsport UK's Board of Directors. His journey from a dominant national champion to an international F1 driver and now a governing body official highlights the evolution of Indian motorsport representation on the global stage.
