How an Indian racing driver transformed his career from karting to global motorsport leagues
In short: Armaan Ebrahim, a Chennai-born racer, transitioned from early karting success to competing in international series like Formula Two and the Lamborghini Super Trofeo. Beyond his time on the track, he co-founded the world's first professional franchise-based motorsport league, marking a significant shift in how racing is structured and promoted.
Born in 1989, Armaan Ebrahim emerged from a family deeply rooted in motorsport, with his father, Akbar Ebrahim, serving as a former F3 champion. Ebrahim began his professional journey in karting, quickly ascending to become the Formula LGB Champion in 2004. His early career saw him represent A1 Team India in the A1 Grand Prix Championship and secure five race wins in the 2007 Formula V6 Asia series, where he finished second in points.
Ebrahim’s international profile grew significantly during his tenure in the FIA Formula Two Championship. In 2009, he was the only Asian driver to join the series' rebirth. His performance was notable for his aggressive overtaking style; the series website rated him as the driver with the best race form, noting he averaged eight overtakes per race, significantly higher than the five managed by the second-best driver, Edoardo Piscopo. He later competed in the American Firestone Indy Lights series and the Blancpain Sprint Series, where he secured seven podiums in the Silver Cup in 2014.
His career evolved further into endurance and sports car racing, including the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia series. In 2016, racing for Dilango Racing, he won the Pro-Am Class championship and finished fourth overall. This experience paved the way for his transition into motorsport management. In 2019, alongside Aditya Patel, he launched the X1 Racing League, an innovative professional franchise-based model designed to expand the reach of the sport. Today, Ebrahim also serves as the vice-president of MECO Motorsports, continuing his influence on the industry that defined his early life.
