How Narain Karthikeyan became the first Indian driver to reach Formula One
In short: Born in Coimbatore, Narain Karthikeyan rose from national karting to become India's first Formula One driver. His career spanned from the Jordan team in 2005 to HRT in 2012, navigating the intense financial and competitive pressures of global motorsport while breaking barriers for Indian racing on the international stage.
Narain Karthikeyan began his journey in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, where his father, a seven-time South India Rally champion, fostered his early interest in motorsport. After honing his skills at the Elf Winfield Racing School in France, Karthikeyan quickly made his mark in Europe. In 1994, he became the first Indian driver to win a championship in Europe by taking the British Formula Ford Winter Series. His ascent continued through the British Formula 3 Championship, where he became the first driver to secure a win for Carlin Motorsport, a team that would later dominate the series.
Karthikeyan’s breakthrough into the pinnacle of motorsport occurred in 2005 when he signed with the Jordan Formula One team. This milestone made him India's first F1 racing driver. His tenure was marked by both technical challenges and unique moments, such as his fourth-place finish at the 2005 United States Grand Prix. Following his initial F1 stint, he served as a test driver for Williams in 2006 and 2007, gaining experience with a top-flight team before returning to the grid with the Hispania Racing Team (HRT) for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Beyond Formula One, Karthikeyan demonstrated versatility across various racing disciplines. He competed in the A1GP series, where he secured India's first pole position and race win, and participated in the Le Mans Series with Team Kolles. In 2010, he ventured into American stock car racing, becoming the first Indian-born driver to compete in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. His performance there earned him the Most Popular Driver Award, making him the first foreign-born recipient of the honor. He eventually concluded his single-seater career in 2019 after racing in the Japanese Super GT series.
